Why it is made this way

Soap is four
ingredients and
a lot of waiting.

Oil, water, lye, and whatever you were willing to steep into it. Everything that separates one bar from another happens in the weeks nobody sees — how long the botanicals sat in the oils, how slowly the water left, whether anyone was in a position to hurry it.

We pour forty bars at a time in a workshop on Gangapur Road, cut them on the second day, and then leave them alone. The bar you open was poured before you knew you wanted it.

It started as forty bars
nobody ordered.

Shraddha made the first batch for her mother, who could not use anything sold in a chemist without her hands cracking. The second batch was for the neighbours. By the fourth she had run out of people to give soap to and started charging for it.

Seven years on the pour is still forty bars, still by hand, still in the same room off Gangapur Road. We have added a second rack and nine growers we buy from directly. We have not added a machine that would let us make more of it faster, because the part that takes six weeks does not care how many people are waiting.
